AFA Welcomes the Approval of Bill C-49

The Alberta Federation of Agriculture (AFA) is commending the House of Commons and Senate after passing of the Federal Transportation Bill C-49.

“We are so pleased to see this important legislation pass and are thankful to both Minister Garneau and Minister MacAulay for their steadfast commitment and focus on this consultation process,” said AFA President Lynn Jacobson.  “Reliable and efficient grain transportation is of critical importance to our operations, and the movement on this bill prior to the new crop year will allow farmers to focus on the task at hand, planting and harvesting another crop, rather than worry about the uncertainty of further rail delays.”
AFA joined the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA), along with a number of other farm organizations, in order to represent the interests of farmers across the prairies with one common and consistent voice.
“Agriculture is a very vast, diverse industry and we have a tendency to become siloed within our own issues” noted Jacobson.  “But there is power in numbers and this process has really been a testament to the power of operating with one common vision and voice.”
While the passing of Bill C-49 with certain amendments is a good first step, there is still more work to be done.
“As the Federal Government looks to now develop the regulations that will be made under the act, AFA is committed to continue working with officials in any way we can to support the process,” said Jacobson.  “Our top priority always remains, and that is ensuring that the voice of Alberta’s farmers is always heard.”
